Signages have made the world a more convenient and simpler place to navigate. Large buildings, business complexes, train stations, airports, and even hospitals can be intimidating to many people, causing anxiety and confusion. Signages can be informative, directional, or even preventative in nature and need to be strategically and methodically placed based on its use and the nature of the business/building.
Cosign has been in the industry for over three decades, decoding the nuances of signage and how they can be incorporated to make these large structures navigable. We have been working across various industries and helping companies of all sizes with their signage needs. There are always some projects that are close to your heart.
Here are seven such projects that were demanding, challenging, and rewarding for our entire team.
Let us look at them.
Port Blair Airport Project
One of our recent projects was for Port Blair Airport, which has both historical and national significance. The increasing traffic at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands year after year necessitated the construction of a new terminal, which has a total built-up area of 40,800 square meters and can handle more than 50 lakh passengers per year.
The large area required careful planning and an extremely accurate signage system to accommodate a large number of passengers every single day. We had to cover a large area while working on the project, which included three floors, four aerobridges, 28 check-in counters, and four conveyor belts. The main challenge of the project was making it weather resistant while remaining simple and matching the other aesthetics of the building. Our solution, such as I sign Display, was the ideal choice for accurate directions and wayfinding. The black anodized profiles added to the aesthetics.
The National Institute of Science Education and Research
This project was significant to us because educational institutions require a unique set of strategy and design concepts. When we began working with the National Institute of Science Education and Research in Bhubaneswar, we faced a sprawling complex with an area of around 73,000 square meters divided into 11 buildings. There were numerous departments, a library, a gymnasium, and numerous other puzzle pieces to solve.
We knew exactly how to approach the brief, which stated that the building should be welcoming and provide a comfortable environment for visitors, teachers, and students alike. It was a quick realization that STRATO, our modular signage product, would be ideal for this structure. STRATO’s, with their curved profile but straight sides, give the building a modern feel. But there is another reason we chose it in particular. The names of the rooms, member boards, and other information in educational institutes are dynamic. As a result, STRATO comes in handy for easily changing the signage as needed. We numbered the rooms, installed name plates for faculty and department heads, and clearly marked the corridors and areas for effective communication.
Emaar Business District 65 (EBD 65)
Because of the opportunities it offers, cities such as Gurgaon are quickly becoming the most appealing hubs of the country. The city’s residential sector is rapidly evolving, and we were given the opportunity to work for Emaar Business District 65. The 48-story residential tower offers 370 apartments over a large area, and the commercial tower offers 1.2 million square feet of office space for external totems.
The goal of Cosign was to provide high quality totems to suit this LEED Gold-certified, high-standard environmentally sustainable project. The signage designs made by the consultant were replicating the grandiose feel of the building in the signage as well. Because the building includes both residential and commercial properties, it was critical that the signage serve both markets and types of visitors. Our TOTEM in I sign was the best solution because they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also maintenance friendly. There are beautifully designed motifs placed on the totem sides making them so distinct.
Alipore Jail Museum
Alipore Jail Museum, built in 1902 on 15.2 acres, is a heritage site in Kolkata. The structure was converted into a museum, with a gallery, coffee shop, souvenir shop, watchtower, exhibition room, and many other interesting features. The site receives many visitors because of its high reputation and noteworthy history.
One of the biggest challenges for this project was placing the signage in the right places to convey the correct message and direction to people traveling from all over the country and sometimes even foreign lands, which was efficiently tackled by our preferred sign maker. To depict the rich history of the place, hundreds of art frames in various sizes were placed throughout the museum. Apart from that, Module Plus outdoor system was installed to facilitate easy navigation through the area. To satisfy the onlookers’ curiosity, the signage had to be made aesthetically appealing and with durable materials.
IIT Campuses in Powai and Hyderabad
IIT Powai covers 545 acres, while IIT Hyderabad covers approximately 600 acres. The top institutes in India house many teachers and students, as well as numerous departments, segments, and other facets. When we were given this project, we were certain that we needed to devise a strategy that included signage options that were easily changeable and required little supervision for updating.
The key here was consistency. With so many lanes, lobbies, rooms, and labs to number and label, we were confident that using Module Plus Indoor would be our primary focus. At the most convenient corners in the lobbies, we installed a floor-by-floor directory with room numbers and their function. Numerous room tags were used for staff and department heads. Because of its size and requirements, it was ambitious and one of the most enriching experiences for the entire team.
The Central Vista Redevelopment Project
The Central Vista redevelopment project was an ambitious target, requiring the time, effort, and patience of the entire Cosign team. When it came to government buildings, we were most concerned with time, diligence, adherence to the brief, and budget. We were certain that this project required a stable outcome, so we proceeded with our best aluminium customized products to ensure the project’s integrity.
Our main concern was selecting the right material that would stand the test of time and never weather. As a result, we chose aluminum with a manageable thickness for future installation or replacement. This also helped to keep the budget in check. The redevelopment project required signage for facilities, information, and wayfinding, among other things. We chose profiles for signage which were sturdy and could be machined. It was one of the most rewarding experiences for us.
Gujarat High Court
Gujarat High Court, one of our earlier projects, receives thousands of visitors on a weekly basis, and it was critical yet challenging to determine which system to use for signage. The goal was to keep the signage effective, changeable and long lasting.
When working on this project, we had to keep the signage system robust yet good-looking. As a result, we went with simple modular signage that contains basic yet critical information about the rooms and facilities in the area. We chose directional and informational signage as the two primary types of signage to be installed in the area. We used overhead wall signage to highlight the room number and its function for easy navigation. Multi level suspended signage was used as wayfinders.
